Golf Club Graphic Design
Modern Winners’ Display Case Study
This project showcases my approach to golf club graphic design, combining traditional club heritage with modern digital display systems.
Working closely with a golf club environment rooted in history, the goal was to create winners’ displays that felt premium, respectful, and future-facing without losing the character that defines the club.
This case study demonstrates how thoughtful graphic design can modernise golf club interiors while preserving tradition.
The Project:
Revolutionising Golf Club Winners’ Displays
For years, golf clubs across the UK have relied on wooden honor boards to proudly showcase competition winners. While steeped in tradition, these boards pose challenges: they’re difficult to update, take up too much space, and don’t always fit the modern aesthetics many clubs are embracing today.
That’s where the future focussed client and my golf club graphic design expertise came into play. Partnering with this specialist company that provides digital screen solutions for golf clubs, I worked as part of a larger team to deliver stunning graphic designs for digital winners’ displays. The company handled the screens, as well as acting as the middleman between me and the golf clubs, while I focused on crafting designs that blended tradition with modern style and touchscreen CMS setup.
This ongoing project has been a collaboration at its core, and so far, I’ve contributed to 13 golf clubs across the UK, designing an average of four screens per club.
As a golf club graphic design project, the work focused on clarity, hierarchy, and longevity. Every design decision was made to ensure the displays would remain timeless, easy to update, and visually consistent with the club’s identity.
Graphic Design for Golf Clubs
Golf clubs present a unique design challenge. They require a careful balance between tradition, prestige, and modern expectations.
My approach to golf club graphic design focuses on creating visual systems that feel considered and permanent whether for winners’ boards, honours displays, signage, or interior graphics.
The result is design that enhances the club environment rather than overpowering it.
Golf clubs needed to transition from wooden boards to digital screens for several reasons:
- Space limitations: Wooden boards take up considerable space, especially for clubs with decades of history.
- High maintenance: Updating them annually can be expensive and time-consuming.
- Modern aesthetics: Clubhouses are evolving, and traditional boards often clash with updated interiors.
The company I partnered with provided the technology – high-resolution digital and touchscreen displays, complete with CMS capabilities for easy updates. My role? To deliver golf club graphic designs that honoured the heritage of these clubs while looking sharp, modern, and functional on-screen.
1. Collaborative Planning
Working with the specialist company, I received detailed project briefs outlining each club’s branding, competition categories, and specific preferences. This collaborative setup allowed me to focus entirely on the graphic design work, ensuring each project reflected the club’s unique identity.
2. Designing for Visual Impact
My goal was to create golf club graphic designs that felt timeless yet contemporary, with a focus on:
- Bold branding: Club logos featured prominently to reinforce identity.
- Elegant color palettes: Rich blues, golds, and greens complemented the clubs’ interiors.
- Readable layouts: Clear typography ensured every name and detail was legible, even from a distance.
- Subtle ornamentation: To maintain the feel of traditional wooden boards, I incorporated ornamental patterns and classic design elements into the screens.
3. Designing for Touchscreens
For clubs opting for touchscreen functionality, I created layouts that balanced beauty with usability. Interactive menus allowed users to browse winners by year, competition type, or category, while also offering space for additional content like upcoming events or historical milestones.
These touchscreen designs also required a deeper understanding of user experience (UX) to ensure that navigating the interface felt intuitive and seamless.
4. Seamless Handoff
Once the designs were finalised, I collaborated closely with the company to ensure they were optimised for the screens. This included testing colours, fonts, and layouts to guarantee they looked stunning on high-resolution displays. Whether the design was static or interactive, every detail was fine-tuned for perfection.
The Results: Golf Club Graphic Design That Works
The result was a refined example of golf club graphic design that modernised the club’s winners’ displays while maintaining a strong connection to tradition
1. Elevated Clubhouse Interiors
The digital screens transformed the look of every clubhouse. By replacing rows of bulky wooden boards with sleek, space-saving displays, the interiors felt more modern and professional while still honoring the clubs’ heritage.
2. Easy Maintenance and Updates
With the CMS in place, updating winners or event details became a breeze. No more costly updates to wooden boards, they just drop us a message a few clicks from anywhere in the world and the new information was live. My graphic designs were created to accommodate these updates seamlessly, ensuring the screens stay visually consistent.
3. Interactive Engagement
Touchscreen functionality added a whole new layer of value. Members could explore winners’ lists, upcoming tournaments, or even historical milestones through an intuitive interface. These designs turned static displays into interactive experiences.
4. A Perfect Blend of Tradition and Innovation
My golf club graphic designs struck a careful balance between respecting tradition and embracing modern technology. The result was a look that felt both classic and fresh, giving each clubhouse a polished and professional edge.
A Collaborative Effort
This project was all about teamwork. The specialist company acted as the middleman, providing the hardware, and managing client relationships. I focused on the graphic design work, building them into the CMS and delivering tailored solutions that met the needs of each club.
This partnership allowed me to channel all my energy into crafting elegant, functional designs that elevated the digital screens. So far, I’ve contributed designs for 13 golf clubs, each project tailored to meet the needs of the client. Whether it’s a single screen or a multi-screen setup, my golf club graphic designs have elevated the overall experience.
